Abstract

This study empirically examines the impact of locally hired CEOs on corporate climate risk awareness, using a sample of A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2007 to 2023. Findings reveal that firms employing local CEOs exhibit significantly higher levels of climate risk awareness. Mechanism analysis indicates that the impact of local CEOs on corporate climate risk attention is more pronounced in regions characterized by stronger CEO hometown attachment and greater media oversight pressure. Supplementary analysis reveals that this association is particularly significant in highly competitive regions and among companies with higher institutional investor ownership.
